currently live in Los Angeles area. this blog has a collection of restaurant reviews, food adventures, and more, focusing on LA, boston, NYC, and virginia area. made in china, raised in beijing, spent my teenager years in bedford, ma, graduated from syracuse university double majoring in accounting and finance, worked as an accountant in boston for 4 year, just moved to LA and seeking a new career. ive always been interested in arts from photography to designs.

i am no expert. never taken any courses on food, wine, photography, or anything related. i am biased because food is personal and simply a preference. i am not a fan of all pretentious bs. food should be fresh, simple, honest, straightforward, available, and most importantly enjoyable. im not a critic; i have a psychological connection with food that isn’t based on any refined tastes but simply an association between food and warmth and love. growing up as a only child with divorced and career driven parents, somehow the idea of having a family meal became my picture of happiness.

i appreciate all good food from fine french/italian to mcdonald’s ice cream cone to my grandma’s cooking. Extravagant tasting menus with unfamiliar ingredients open my eyes, but I appreciate more of the very well-made simple dishes that really tell about a culture and a story like Cacio e Pepe for the romans, beef noodle soup for Taiwanese, or zha jian mian for us Beijing’er. They don’t necessarily have mind blowing flavors, but they are the basic things that define who we are and always go back to no matter how great that tasting menu was. my mission is to find that best ‘bowl of beef noodles’ as opposed to eating at every michelin star restaurant in the world (although i would love to).

this blog is a memoir. that moment i shared with that someone at the dinner table whether its porkbelly, a friend, family, an ex, or a stranger, that conversation after that bottle of wine or that that rude host ruined my nightthat moment we all reached orgasm in our mouth together, that celebration and the toast, that laughter, that argument, that hundred dollar tip, that drunk friend and whatever happened afterwards, that dirty look when i busted out my dslr, that similarity i shared with a total stranger, that story behind that dish, that long walk on a hot summer night… all started or ended from that dinner table. food is bigger than food.

all images, words, and opinions are the property of the website owner and absolutely no content can be used WITHOUT prior PERMISSION EVEN WITH APPROPRIATE CREDITS GIVEN.

i do try to keep my blog somewhat informative or unbiased for readers as i write; however, i have no intentions or incentives to keep this blog professional because this blog is for my own entertainment.

any questions and concerns, i (La La) can be reached @ bunnyandporkbelly [at] gmail [dot] com

im open to events, photoshoots, reviews, or even a new career.

  21. I just wanted to say thank you for following Just a Small Town Girl. I appreciate it and it means alot to me!

  22. These posts contain wonderful, well-written, even funny, reviews. I enjoyed the visit here! Will tell my niece who visits Boston often and used to live there while her husband was at Harvard.

  23. Very nice food photography. How do you manage the lighting in all the places you visit? It looks like more than an on-camera flash and I can’t imagine those restaurants have such nice studio lighting at their tables!

    1. thanks haha. lighting at some of the restaurants is almost non-existent, sometimes i even have hard time reading the menu. a decent camera would allow me to take somewhat good pix at low light setting and the rest is the magic of photoshop 🙂

      1. Well, then you’re really good with Photoshop. The images are very clear and enticing.

I’ve been to a few of those type restaurants as well. I keep a small LED flashlight on my keychain just so I can read the menu!

  24. thanks for stopping by and deciding to follow my blog. I love trying new dishes and your photos really made me want to try some of the meals you photographed. They looked delicious.

  25. Love the blog! I’m from the boston area, then moved to VA for college, and ended up there for a long time!

  29. Thank you for dropping by my blog and liking my post.

Your pictures of the food and surroundings are very crisp and clear. I’ll be following your blog! 🙂

    Keep in touch!!

  45. Great blog! I love your philosophy on food, it reminds me of my own. 🙂 I also come from a family where food is everything. I love stories about food am trying to get a new blog going where people submit memories they have of cooking with their fathers. I suspect from your discussion of your family that you might have one. Check it out if you’re interested! http://ourstorythyme.wordpress.com/ Either way, I look forward to following your blog!

  46. Such gorgeous photographs – so clean and beautifully lit and inviting. Thanks for visiting my blog – I only wish for – oh – one tenth of your energy in putting this together!

  47. I love your blog and the pictures are great! I like the way you review the restaurants, simple and honest. I also love good food, specially Peruvian food! Thanks for visiting my blog.

I will keep coming back for more drooling 😉

  48. Thanks for the follow! Hook me up with some nice restaurant choices in Watertown or nearby! Any good Pho or Shabu Shabu spots?

      1. I’m actually in CT but come up to Boston pretty regularly to see family, who are in watertown

  49. Hey there, thanks for liking+following my blog! I love how you said you’re not a fan of pretentious food stuff, I can definitely agree with that sentiment!

Anyway, you’ve given me food (ha) for thought for when I visit America… whenever that may be.

  50. Thanks for stopping by and liking my post. I really appreciate it. 🙂

I know you hear this a lot but your blog name is just cute. I’ll be sure to scroll through a few of your posts later. 🙂

  51. Yes, very nice indeed my friend
    and your introduction is wickedly
    enchanting 🙂

Have a very nice rest of weekend 🙂

    Androgoth

  52. I lived in Allston for a few years in the mid-2000’s. Boston’s a great town.

BTW, thanks for the follow; I look forward to seeing more of your posts, as well.

  53. Thx for following me

Well formed blog:-) As for the photos, most important is practice than taking courses. Keep up working and trying new things.

  54. All the food looks so delicious and I can only agree with you that good food is simple and straighforward! I’ll certainly be stopping by more often in the future 🙂
And thank you for stopping by my blog earlier. I probably wouldn’t have found yours otherwise. And you have such a lovely one! I think it’s wonderful to discover great new blogs through likes and follows on your own blog. Cheers!

  55. You foodie adventures sound delish…when I find myself in that part of the world again I’m going to use your blog as a resource.

For now I just arrived in Florence, Italy…and there’s some amazing food and wine here…in fact I’m going offline for a few days to take it all in!

  56. Hi BunnyandPorkBelly, thanks for checking out my blog! One question for you, how did you get your blog address in your photographs? Did you do that in Lightroom 4? How do you like Lightroom 4? Did you buy any books to help you learn the program or did you upgrade from Lightroom 3? I am thinking about purchasing it. Love that you listed your photo gear, I am also interested in knowing what other people shoot with. Have a good night!

    1. that sounds more like 4 questions than one question hahahah. kidding.
      1. if you use lightroom, it allows you to put watermark on when you export your pic. the address is a watermark that i created.
      2. yes i use lightroom. i love it. i edit 80% of my pix using lightroom. more user friendly and easier than photoshop.
      3. never read books, just play with it and practice. it’s much easier than photoshop.
hopefully this helps. let me know if you have other questions im willing to answer!

      1. Thanks! I am thinking I am going to purchase the software sometime this week. I am serious about selling my work. I have been into photography since I was nine and started with a little baby blue 110mm camera. One more question(it really is just one). Do you sell any of your photographs?

      2. No I haven’t sold my pix but I’ve had ppl offer to buy. I’m doing this jus for fun so I didn’t have the original copies of the ones that they wanted. Yea I’m not a serious photographer.

      3. Most sites give you the option to sell digital copies or actual hard copy prints. I am considering buying a enlarger and chemicals this winter and printing my own black and white prints. I found a awesome lab out in California called The Darkroom, I still shot black and white film, with my Canon Rebel SII. My digital camera is a Canon D10, hoping to upgrade either this winter or spring.

  57. A good friend of mine and I started a similar blog about Detroit! Check out tuesdaysaturday.wordpress.com to see what we get into! Take care.

  58. Mouth-watering food photography. Shame I don’t live around there, your photos and opinions on the restaurants would give me incentive to try them out!
On another note, thanks for stopping by my site-in-progress! And the follow of course.

  59. Hi Bunny and Pork Belly….emmmmmmmmmmpork belly…sorry.
Just wondering if you happen to know what the seeds in the dessert you are eating at Manji Dessert in flushing Posted 4 august are. I ahve seen them before but dont know what they are.

    regards
    food ninja

  60. YOU ARE AMAZING AT TAKING AND EDITING PICTURES! I want to learn more from you! About your cameras, their prices and some of your tried and true techniques! You have amazing work! Do you use photoshop?

  61. Thanks for checking out my blog. I am a transplanted Bostonien living as a “desert rose” in the Middle East and loving it. I have to admit reading through your insightful blog has brought back many fond memories. Looking forward to future postings.

  62. Thank you for visiting my blog. I have never been to the East Coast although my wife and I will fly into NYC next month. It’s only for one day, so we’ll probably eat at Carnegie’s Deli just so I can say I’ve been there. In the meantime, I will follow your blog for dining opportunities when travels bring me back your way. Ciao from Panama.
    Mike

  63. Thanks for visiting my blog. You have a great yummy looking blog! I’d take more pictures of the places that I eat but my girlfriend is embarrassed when I take pictures of my food. So to save my self the trouble, I just don’t. Anyways, keep posting your amazing looking food!

  64. I agree with this “good food is good food”. I love your appetite in eating. I love eating, as well. Thanks for the follow. I hope i can read more restaurant and food reviews in your blog. Great blog and you’ve wonderful photos here. 🙂

  65. Thanks for following my blog. I have family in the metro DC area, and I love trying out new restaurants. I’ll have to check out your blog in the future for references when visiting there. I love the ambiance of the Barroco restaurant in Montreal – I’ll put that on my list!

  66. Thanks for visiting and following my blog! I love seeing your posts pop up in my reader even if they do make me hungry 🙂 My family and I came to Boston for the 4th of July this year and I thought it was just the best thing ever.

I saw that you had a tapas review and I have a suggestion for you. As we were walking to the riverside for the fireworks, we came across Kika Tapas (on the Cambridge side). It looked brand new like they had just opened or something. Lemme tell ya – best place to go as a family. Everyone chose a tapas and we all shared. We all left full and everything was delicious. My favorites – the wild mushrooms, lobster/crab raviolis, scallops in saffron cream, and the lamb meatballs in truffle cream sauce (I’ll never look at a meatball the same way again…)
    Happy blogging!

  67. “… food should be fresh, simple, straightforward, available, and most importantly enjoyable.”

I couldn’t agree more! And you run quite a delectable blog! If only I could it whole (just kidding!) Oh,and thanks for dropping by my page ^^

  68. Hey,

You have a good blog here.

Well, I don’t have much idea about photography or cameras, but yup, in the case of eating and enjoying what I eat I am a pro (but not in cooking).

Will drop by to get hold of some new dishes from your blog. And I should say, u luk really pretty. 🙂

  69. Hi bunny!
I very much like the essential, elegantly minimalist look of your blog. I also like your reviews… and the names you picked for the two of you are to die for! 🙂
    Take care!

  70. I’ve just had a look through a few of your posts and the food looks delicious. I look forward to reading your future posts. 🙂

  71. You sound like a girl after my own heart! btw, I grew up in N.VA, in Fairfax Co. I haven’t been back in many years, but my son just took his wife and little girls out there. Enjoy it!

  72. I went to school in the East Coast so I miss NY and Boston; I’ll have to live vicariously through your blog 😉 Happy dining & sharing!!

  73. Hi! I started looking through your posts and pictures and I am amazed, what great work! Food photography is something I’m stumbling through and would like to learn more about…looking forward to future posts!

    1. Boy, TELL me about it! I’m in exile in the middle of Kentucky, which cannot decide if it wants to be Midwestern or Southern; hence my blog. The people here know nothing about food or entertaining.

  74. so glad we found one another in this blog world, i can’t wait to peruse your take on the boston dining scene. who knows, maybe we’ll pump into each other in this little city of ours!

  75. I’m so excited to find your blog! One of my favorite things to do is to follow my husband around when he has to travel for work, and he frequently goes to Virginia/DC and Boston – two of my favorites places. While there, my job is to scout out the best places to eat and entertain, and we often stay over a few days for some time together – just the two of us. Your blog will help tremendously! For fun, we often visit NYC. We were there a couple of months ago with friends and did a Margarita pizza crawl. What fun!

  76. I’ve been enjoying your posts–looks like you had fun at your party. Just wanted to let you know that I’ve been thinking about you and praying for your safety in the Hurricane Sandy storm. Hope you’re able to stay home and enjoy some great food as you wait out the storm! Blessings!

  77. Hi,

I’ve just been reading some of your blog… I really like it… You seem like a nice and down to earth person (I like that you appreciate things like McDonald’s ice cream. Fast food and cheap food doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad food… Likewise expense doesn’t always mean quality – as you found at the Gallows place in Boston..)

I think you have done some really good work anyway…

  78. My husband went to syracuse too and i’m from the Boston area! – We live in Asheville, NC – not far from Virginia – we have some pretty amazing food here too – id love to have you blog about it.

  79. Hey, thanks for following. And thanks for giving me the opportunity to stumble on your blog. what a great blog. I always wanted to travel and eat. The sad part is every time I get to travel, its a short amount of time so most of the time is spent on those tourist areas; If I had the time and money, I’d love to go around to places like Anthony Bourdaine and by pass the tourists areas and go eat what the locals are having!

  80. that’s some yummy looking food you have there, and glad to see you have toured the montreal culinary scene: next up Vancouver! Thanks for the follow and keep up the delicious work.

  81. Hi there.

I love the pics of food you have put up on your blog- the flavour jumps right out of it. Makes me wanna eat the pics itself! 😉

Wish you a very happy new year and many more food adventures!!

    cheers

    Shalini

  82. Hi Bunny! First of all, I love your blog! Your photos are amazing! I noticed my previous comment was cut short, sorry about that!

I don’t know why or how, but I have also been receiving emails of people commenting on YOUR blog! I am confused as to how this is happening and don’t know how to fix it! I noticed that you got the last one from Shalzmojo so at least you are getting them as well. Hope you can figure it out! 🙂

  83. I saw your title, and I immediately thought of Chinese food-specialty – I see I wasn’t far off the mark! 🙂 And now, I admit that I’m a little hungry for some “bao”, preferably stuffed with BBQ-pork (叉燒)!

  84. Your photo on this page is so lovely and made me go and look at other photos/articles you have posted! Great blog with lots of interesting posts!

  85. I just wish I was going to have a chance to check out some of your recommendations for myself some time soon!

  86. Hi! Your blog is awesome! I can’t wait to see more and more pictures as you take them! Photography is a hobby of mine and I hope to use my camera more and more on my blogging adventure.

  87. Dear BunnyandPorkBelly,

I have nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award. You inspire me and I want you to know it. Now, to keep the love going, your task is to write a post sharing your nomination and who nominated you, plus 7 things about yourself and a list of 15 blogs that inspire you. Then don’t forget to tell those blogs that you nominated them (like I am doing now). Keep up your amazing work.

    Sincerely,
    Natasha

  88. I love your blog. And thanks for the tips on good programs for post production of photos. I’m always looking for good tips like that for my food shots.

  89. Hey,

Really cool blog. I like the concept and how you’ve positioned it. Hope you check SF soon. We’ve got an amazing dining scene.

  90. Hey there! I love the honesty you bring to your food critique, and I’m definitely looking forward to checking out some places on your list the next time I’m in Boston.

  91. Hi!
I’m not a foody, but we have photography in common. I love photoshop 🙂 I use it on just about every photo. What a difference it makes.
I love the look of your blog, and your passion shines through!
    Good luck with your CPA!
    Alison

  92. Looking at your blog made me so hungry – great photography. Before I dedicated myself to painting as a full-time artist I was a portrait photographer, so I always appreciate an inspiring photo 😉

I wish you all the best,

    Melissa McKinnon: Artist

  93. In my youth, I spent a few years in the Far East and have not stopped eating rice and anything connected with it since. What a sweet delicious site! I will follow rice and ramen anywhere….

  94. I love the name of this blog. I can’t wait to go through your posts. I am also a fan of Mitsuwa, both New Jersey and San Diego. Have you been to Sunrise Mart in the East Village?

  95. I just want to mention I’m very new to blogs and truly liked this blog. Very likely I’m planning to bookmark your blog post . You really come with tremendous article content. With thanks for sharing with us your web-site.

  96. I love the photo account of the food and restaurants that you frequent. It all looks so bright and fresh and nicely shot.:) I hope you do revisit my blog and check my newer reviews out. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.Thanks.

  97. Hey there! You just started following my blog so I wanted to check out your blog and say, “Hi.” I’ve looked through some of your posts, and I’m impressed with your food photography. You taught yourself well! Thanks for following.

  98. Love the photos of food. And your passion for sharing time around the table really shows through. Look forward to reading more. All the best! –Linda

  99. I am having a lot of fun eating my way through China. Currently in Zhejiang (Hangzhou) eating farmer food. I really should think about getting a better camera for my food shots, but I almost never take pictures. I prefer not being behind a lens. Who knows we might meet up in China and celebrate food 🙂

  100. Love your blog name and those macarons you made were really stunning, I could almost taste them 🙂

  101. Love your blog. Never knew looking at pictures of curry would make me feel hungry at 9am, but you’ve done it! Looking forward to reading more.

  102. I completely empathize with the strange looks I get in restaurants whenever I take out my camera to photograph what’s on the table. Anyway, 能吃是福, so hope that you’ll continue your food blogging adventure!

  103. Great blog! Love the amazing pictures, which seems to make me hungry. I look forward to reading more about your travels and your culinary experiences.

    -Sidney Sak

  104. Love your passion for good food. I’ve been to Taiwan a couple times and remember having some type of noodle soup there…While it looked simple, it was amazing. I’ve not had any noodle dish since that was quite as delicious. I’m chasing the noodle soup dragon. Well, there was a place in Chinatown NYC that was comparable… almost.
    mànmàn chī!

  105. Best pictures of food and resturaunts I’ve ever seen, so colourful and the expressions of all the staff when cooking are pricess. My mouth is watering at the cold noodle/vegetable and fish dishes. Very healthy and what an adventure going around the decor and streets too of Boston. My grandpa’s sister Margaret(Meg) used to write to me from Boston over 40 years ago and though I been in the States did not see Boston. I love Oriental/Asian Food. Prize-winning photos. Thanks for this and for looking into my blog too.

  106. I am a New Yorker living in Texas BUT Boston is my favorite city! Should you ever make it down this way let me know and I’ll direct your taste buds to some very good and very simple great food!

  107. My husband’s family lives in Boston and my husband and I go there once or twice a year. We’re vegan, and I’m wondering if you ever review any vegan or vegan-friendly restaurants. Your reviews are wonderful – the photos are amazing.

  108. I just had some Bangkok 54 Thai food two days ago in Arlington. I’d say 90 percent of the food is pretty damn good, but they went a little heavy on the heat for the thai basil chicken. I needed a sweat towel afterward. I enjoy your posts. Keep the D.C. restaurant reviews coming!

  109. Your photo quality is fantastic. The food looks beautiful! I have just started in the blogging world, but looking at your pictures is making me want to invest in a better camera. Your blog is a joy to read 🙂

  110. Your a beautiful young lady with a beautiful eye for photography! I agree with several others, just looking at the photos makes me hungry.

  111. Much like the lovely blogger who nominated me, I generally don’t participate in these awards things. (I know, I know, EVERYONE says that), but I thought the WordPress Family Award was actually pretty special, decided to spread the love, and nominated you. Stop by my latest post accepting the award for details if you’re interested (http://wp.me/pwIUF-5B )…I promise I won’t be offended if you’re not though. I know a lot of people don’t do these things. Cheers!

  112. I took a look around your delicious-looking blog and love what you’ve done here. Really like your tagline, “life is always sweeter and yummier through a lens.” So cute. I totally agree!

  113. I love your food and review blog, especially your photos! They’re great!

  115. Wonderful blog! I lived in Boston a long time ago, so your blog brings back great memories for me. Cheers, Mom of Dragon Boy

  116. Hey wait a minute. I was looking through the wishlist and noticed today is your birthday?! Happy birthday, Bunny! Thanks a lot for doing this blog as clearly it’s inspired me greatly as seen by my site ahaha.

  117. Hi you two. Thanks for the like on my post “Cool Change”. I guess the Boston/VA comparison caught you attention, huh? Btw, I don’t see the Afghan restaurant Helmand in Cambridge on your list. Ever try it?

  118. “Food is bigger than food.” That about says it all. Love seeing your mouthwatering photos of food and good purveyors of, and insights into your experiences. Great ‘world view’!

  119. Hi La La,
Nice to meet you! Thanks for stopping by. Your about post has reminded me of an unfinished ramble I had written down (but not posted) on treating food in a pretentious manner. Am definitely with you, in that food snobbery drives me up the wall, for that, to me, it should be simple, good, and honest.
I look forward to salivating over your posts moving forward!
    Regards,
    Luisa

  122. Such a great food blog! Your photos are delicious! I am currently trying to introduce insect foods to Americans and working with Boston chefs (sixfoods.com)! Would love to connect 🙂

  123. Just a quick message to say thanks for following my blog. Today I reached 300 followers. i know that’s not much of a milestone for most bloggers, but I really do appreciate every single person who appreciates something about my photos or thoughts enough to follow my blog, especially when they take great photos as you do – I take it as a great compliment. Thanks again, and I’m glad I discovered your blog as well – I’m not particularly generous with my follows, but yours is well worth it.

  124. Love love your blog!! I totally agree with your look on food and the experience of same. Many thanks for the follow!!
